Paintball FAQ

How do you play paintball?

Paintball is played out in the woods or specifically designed fields, by two opposing teams. In the most common game, each team will start out on opposite ends of the field, each side having a flag hung at their home-base. The object of the game is to be the first to get the other team’s flag and bring it back to your base, eliminating (shooting) members of the other team before they get you. The rules are very simple, which is why it is so much fun to play.

Is it safe?

Paintball is an action sport, so there is the potential for injury if adequate protection is not worn (eye goggles, etc) and if rules are not followed. Many fields require goggles be worn at all times and that gun barrel plugs be used while players are not actively playing. Ignoring safety rules will get you ejected from the facility. Most common injuries are scrapes and bruises from navigating the playing field.

What ages can play?

Anyone 12 years old and older can play paintball. Some places will let kids under 12 play if accompanied by an adult.

Does it hurt to get hit with a paintball?

The paint pellet is a lightweight, thin plastic shell filled with water-soluable paint. All you will feel is a quick stinging sensation through your clothes or on your skin when hit. The intensity of the sting depends on the proximaty of the shooter. If shot at close range, of course the sting will be stronger. You may even see a welt or two.

Is it expensive?

Depending on where you live, the cost could range from to or more for a one day equipment rental and some paintballs. If you already own your equipment, then it is usually just nominal field fee.

What else do I need to bring?

Most people bring their own cooler of snacks and water. Wear old clothes that can take abuse, along with sturdy shoes. Old towels and wipes will also come in handy for clean-ups.

What kind of safety equipment is needed?

The bare minimum would be goggles, a facemask with ear and throat protection, and for the guys, an athletic cup.
